First league win for Under 19s

Clydesdale Bank Under 19 League
St Mirren (1) v Saints (3)
Attendance [n/a]

The Saints Under 19 side have secured their first league win of the season by defeating St Mirren away from home this afternoon.

The match finished 3-1 in our favour and it was a result that pleased Under 19 coach Alec Cleland who said “The boys are still finding their feet in what is an unforgiving league and I am delighted with this result. We played well to get in front and then defended very well towards the end when we were under a bit of pressure. To get the win in an away game and with a side that was stretched in terms of personnel makes it all the more satisfying. We had two sixteen year olds used as substitutes with 20 minutes remaining.”

The first league win comes on the back of the boys 10-0 thrashing of Edinburgh City in the SFA Youth Cup last weekend and Cleland says “I think that win in the cup has given the boys a bit of confidence and today’s result will help in that respect as well.”

In today’s game Saints took the lead when Mark Durnan headed home a Ricky McIntosh corner kick and that lead was extended when a Steven Reynolds flick on was taken up by Stevie May who cut it back for Martyn Shields to score.

The home side made it 2-1 before half-time but a Steven Reynolds penalty kick after Matt Hemsley had been brought down made it 3-1.

Saints: Duffy, Hemsley, Sullivan, Durnan, Alexander, Caddis, McIntosh, Shields, O’Hare, Reynolds, May.
