Cammy Thomson scored the winning spot-kick against Forfar Athletic to take a relieved St. Johnstone Development side through to the fourth round of the Scottish Youth Cup in Angus last night.

Saints had gone into the match against the League Two side full of confidence after back-to-back wins in the SPFL Development League against Rangers and Dunfermline, however, they were unable to find a way past a stubborn Forfar side at a bitterly cold Station Park.

Both the 90 minute match and the 30 minute extra time period ended goalless and so the game came down to a penalty shoot out.

Greg Page, Danny Jardine and Connor McLaren all scored, before Robbie Polson (saved) and Ali McCann (over the bar) missed theirs. Joe Johnson then scored and Cammy Thomson converted the final penalty to take Saints through. Goalkeeper Ben Mackenzie was superb in the shoot out, saving three overall.

Speaking after the game, Alistair Stevenson said: "It was a really competitive game but the boys know they didn't play as well as they did last Monday in the win over Inverness.

"We found it hard to find that breakthrough and in extra time there were chances at either end with both sides coming close. But we're glad to make it through to the next round."

Last night's line up: Mackenzie; Lumsden, Comrie (O'Reilly 90), Page, Thomson; McLaren, Jardine, McCann, Simpson; Hurst (Polson 61), Docherty (Johnson 61).
