Head to Head | Livingston

22nd January 2019

Wednesday 23 January 2019

We welcome Livingston to McDiarmid Park tonight in our first league match since returning from the winter break.

It's the second meeting between the clubs this season with Saints coming out on top back in October. Matty Kennedy's early goal at the Tony Macaroni Arena was enough to secure a 1-0 victory.

Tonight is only the 23rd meeting between Saints and Livingston - what does the head to head record between the clubs look like?

HISTORY

Saints played Livingston for the first time back in 1995 in a Coca-Cola Cup tie at McDiarmid Park.

Paul Sturrock was the Saints boss at the time with Jim Leishman in charge of Livi. At the time, Saints were a First Division side pushing to regain top flight status while the visitors were two divisions below having just taken over Meadowbank Thistle's league place.

Despite the two divisions between the sides it was billed as a close encounter and so it would prove to be.

The visitors went ahead after just eight minutes through Bailey but George O'Boyle equalised just before half-time.

Saints huffed and puffed but couldn't find the winner even after 30 minutes of extra-time so the match went to penalties.

Allan Preston missed the first spotkick for Saints before Gary Farquhar and Danny Griffin converted there penalties.

Kevin McGowne watched on as his effort was saved by the Livi 'keeper and the visitors converted all four of their penalties to progress to the next round.

More recently in April 2008, Saints recorded a 5-2 victory at McDiarmid Park against tonight's opponents.

Kevin Moon scored the opening goal for Saints on the stroke of half-time before two Paul Sheerin penalties and a brace from Steven Milne helped Derek McInnes' side to a comfortable victory.

Murray Davidson featured for the visitors that day - and scored - with Leigh Griffiths scoring the other Livi goal.

Both Murray and Leigh Griffiths featured in a Livingston line-up which included a number of familiar faces such as Dorrans, McPake and Halliday, with Robert Snodgrass an unused substitute that day for the visitors.

The last time the two clubs met in a league fixture at McDiarmid Park was back in February 2009.

Familiar faces in Murray Davidson, Dave Mackay and Danny Griffin lined up for Livingston that day but it was Saints who came out on top thanks to a Collin Samuel goal.

Saints would go on to gain promotion back to the top flight at the end of that season where we have been ever since and tonight will be the first league meeting between the clubs in Perth for almost a decade.

TOMMY WRIGHT RECORD

The club has only faced Livingston twice since the appointment of Tommy Wright as manager back in 2013.

A 2-0 victory in the Scottish Cup in the manager's first season in charge kickstarted what would be a memorable campaign which would end with Saints winning the competition for the first time in the club's history.

Stevie May and Sanel Jahic scored that day at McDiarmid Park in a match refereed by none other than Andrew Dallas - the man with the whistle this evening.

The only other meeting between the clubs during the manager's tenure was earlier this season when Matty Kennedy's 5th minute goal was enough to secure a 1-0 victory.

Kick-off tonight is at 7:45PM and a reminder to our overseas Saints TV subscribers that we will be broadcasting the match LIVE this evening.
