Head to Head | St. Mirren

25th December 2018

Tuesday 25 December 2018

We head to Paisley tomorrow to face St. Mirren at the Simple Digital Arena for our Ladbrokes Premiership Boxing Day fixture.

It's the second meeting between the two clubs in the Ladbrokes Premiership this season with Saints coming out on top at McDiarmid Park back in October in a 2-0 victory which also saw not one, but two missed penalties!

Saints come into the match on the back of back-to-back defeats while tomorrow's opponents won last time out against Motherwell. Tomorrow's game will be the 123rd meeting between the sides.

HISTORY

The first competitive match between Saints and St. Mirren was on 6th February 1904 in a Scottish Cup 2nd Round tie at Love Street, Paisley. Saints were still an amateur side back then competing in the Northern League while The Buddies were an established First Division outfit.

It was a good contest in the early stages but the much fancied hosts took the lead through Greenlees just before half-time.

The players remained on the pitch for their Bovril and on resumption the visitors tried hard to get the equaliser. It was the home side who got the vital second goal however, and superior fitness told in the last 15 minutes with the Paisley side notching two further goals through Smith and Jackson to make it 4-0 at full-time.

Despite that early defeat history does make good reading for Saints when the head to head records are compared.

Out of 122 meetings, Saints have come out on top on 55 occasions with 35 draws and 32 defeats. The game will be played at the Simple Digital Arena tomorrow and even when it comes to meetings between the clubs in Paisley it's the Perth side who come out on top with 24 victories to St. Mirren's 17 - with 20 matches ending in a stalemate.
