PREVIEW | Saints v Rangers

21st December 2018

Friday 21 December 2018

Saints welcome Rangers to McDiarmid Park this Sunday in a match that will be broadcast live on BT Sport with a 12:15PM kick-off.

It's the second meeting between the sides in thed Ladbrokes Premiership this season with Steven Gerrard's men winning convincingly at Ibrox back in September.

Tommy Wright will be looking for his players to bounce back from the defeat against Motherwell last weekend and to rediscover the form that saw the club go eight matches unbeaten prior to Saturday's 2-1 loss against The Steelmen.

Speaking to the club's official website ahead of the game, the manager says that his players are motivated by getting the three points and not by getting revenge for the defeat at Ibrox three months ago.

"I know the idea of revenge is used a lot in football," said Tommy, "but if we need revenge as motivation then we need to take a look at ourselves.

"Our focus is all on getting three points and to do that we're going to have to learn from the game back in September.

"We created chances which was obviously positive but we were too open and we were punished for it.

"We're keen to finish this year strongly before the break so we want to pick up another three points on Sunday and that's our main focus."

The manager watched Rangers' midweek stalemate with Hibs and was impressed by what he saw from Gerrard's side.

"They played extremely well against what is a strong Hibs side," he said.

"They have been a bit frustrated though because in a number of games - particularly away from home - they've not been able to convert their dominance into goals.

"I think they might have a few injury concerns from Wednesday night's game and they've had a long season with their European involvement but I don't think that's going to bother them.

"They have a very big squad filled with quality so I am sure they will be able to coped fine with it.

"Rangers and Celtic always bring big crowds but our players thrive on it. The fact that the BT Sport cameras will be there means it gives them another platform to get out there and show people what they can do.

"We'll try be positive and play on the front foot as much as possible and if we do that I believe we can get a result from the game."

On the injury front, Jason Kerr returned to full training yesterday after a knock but apart from long-term absentees Drey Wright, Brian Easton and Conor Mitchell, the manager has a full squad to choose from.

"Jason took a couple of nasty knocks against Motherwell last week and hadn't trained until yesterday but it looks like he'll be fine," Tommy said.

"Ando is fit so apart from the long-term injuries we're looking pretty strong.

"With three games in six days having that strength in depth is vital. Having more players available to me over the Christmas period means we can freshen things up if we need to as well which is always good news for a manager."

Sunday's match is LIVE on BT Sport with a 12:15PM kick-off. The referee is Nick Walsh.
