Saints 1-0 Partick Thistle

Saturday 19th August

Michael O'Halloran scored his fourth league goal of the season as Saints defeated Partick Thistle 1-0 at McDiarmid Park to keep the 100% start to the season intact.

MATCH REPORT

Tommy Wright picked the same starting XI that defeated Motherwell last Saturday, as Saints looked to make amends for a league cup defeat to Partick on the 8th August.

The visitors got the first half underway.

The first chance of the game came on 13 minutes when a Richard Foster free kick found Steven Anderson in space in the box but his shot was parried away by Tomas Cerny and fell to Joe Shaughnessy but the Partick keeper made a great save to deny the Irishman.

After some great passing play, David Wotherspoon found Michael O'Halloran, who made a darting run into the box, but the linesman flagged for offside.

On 27 minutes, Chris Erskine was fed a pass from Miles Storey but his shot from outside the 18 yard box was palmed away by Alan Mannus.

After some great passing from back to front Anderson found another one of O'Halloran's special darting runs and his powerful shot found the bottom left hand corner making it 1-0 Saints with 34 minutes played.

Just a minute later great passing from a corner saw Wotherspoon make a neat pass to O'Halloran who found Steven MacLean in the box, who's shot stung the palms of Cerny and went out for a Saints corner which eventually came to nothing.

Straight off the bat after the internal, a Brian Easton cross from the left hand side flashed passed the front of goal but there were no takers. It fell to Stefan Scougall who played in another inviting ball but it was eventually cleared by the Partick defence.

A Shaughnessy ball up the park found Scougall who cut back to MacLean, who's shot was deflected for a corner. The resulting corner amounted to a scramble in the box which was eventually cleared by Partick.

After a great ball from MacLean on 69 minutes O'Halloran made a run into the box and took a swipe at the ball but his attempt went over the bar.

With the visitors pressing late on for an equaliser, Mannus pulled off a great save to deny Niall Keown from 30 yards out.

The final score was 1-0 to St. Johnstone.
