St. Johnstone cruised past League One Stenhousemuir at McDiarmid Park this afternoon to reach the last 16 of the William Hill Scottish Cup.

First half strikes from Steven MacLean and man of the match Blair Alston were enough to see of the Warriors in front of 2,441 spectators.

Visitors Stenny kicked off shooting into the Ormond Stand,, but Saints fashioned the first chance as Steven MacLean smashed a low driven shot off team mate Graham Cummins.

However Saints were ahead inside five minutes as Macca (MacLean) headed a placed cross from the right wing beyond keeper McCabe. 1-0.

The game quietened down after that, but a powerful mazy run by Swanson culminated in the winger tucking a low drive just wide of the post on 19 minutes.

Saints did double their advantage after just over half an hour as MacLean teed up Alston with a delicate backheel and the former Falkirk winger stroked in from 18 yards. 2-0.

A late header from a corner saw Shaughnessy find the roof of the net and the teams went in at 2-0.

Saints started the second half brightly, and forced keeper McCabe into a save through Alston who disguised his lob as a cross.

Alston turned provider for Cummins on 68 minutes gliding into the box, but his squared pass was blasted wide by the Irishman.

Cummins was then gifted an opportunity from a Millar cross, but just failed to make contact with the ball.

Wotherspoon came close moments later with a drive from the edge of the area after a goalmouth stramash, but his driven effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Brown Ferguson’s made his first change on 72 minutes, replacing Furtado with Mazana.

Saints responded by switching Swanson for Craig.

As the game quietened down, Saints brought on Kane for Cummins and Stenhousemuir replaced McMenamin with Docherty

The Warriors’ final change was to bring on McRoary for Meechan with two minutes to go.

Blair Alston had a wonder volley deflected behind after connecting beautifully with a Craig cross.

From the resulting set piece, both Chris Kane and Steven MacLean saw efforts denied.

And it finished as Saints progressed to the next round of the Scottish Cup. The dream goes on. Full time: St Johnstone 2-0 Stenhousemuir.
