DOUG NEWLANDS 1931 - 2011

DOUG NEWLANDS 1931 - 2011 The Club is sad to learn of the death of former player Doug Newlands who passed away last week.

The winger had two spells with Saints, the first of those being on loan from Aberdeen in season 1953/54 and he soon earned rave reviews for his performances on the wing.

In March 1955 he was transferred from The Dons to Burnley where his reputation as a fast right winger with great crossing ability continued to grow and he was a Turf Moor regular for two seasons during which time he got himself into the Scotland squad for the 1958 World Cup Finals in Sweden although he would find himself out of the trimmed-down squad who eventually went to the tournament.

Season 1959/60 was spent with Stoke City and it was from there that he returned to Scotland and St Johnstone, playing 25 games and scoring 5 goals in 1960/61 – our first back in the top division following promotion the previous season.

His time at Muirton lasted just the one season and he went onto play for Airdrieonians and manage Forfar Athletic.

The thoughts of everyone at McDiarmid Park are with Doug’s family at this sad time and we are pleased to be hosting the family’s funeral reception tea at the stadium later this week.
