UNDER 19s BEGIN SPL CAMPAIGN TODAY

UNDER 19s BEGIN SPL CAMPAIGN TODAY A new season of Clydesdale Bank Under 19 football gets up and running today with Saints opening their campaign away to Aberdeen. (Balgownie Playing Fields, 1pm).

After the pre-season build-up which has included participation in the Oban tournament plus various friendly matches the boys are looking forward to competitive action.

With seven new full-time players having come on board at the start of pre-season training, Under 19 Coach Alec Cleland is aware that his side face a steep learning curve but is confident that his team will learn quickly as they have done in previous seasons and aided by the more experienced players he has at his disposal he feels the boys can give a good account of themselves as the campaign progresses.

Alec told the Saints Official Website: “Once again, we will have a young team compared to many other SPL sides but I’m convinced that this is the right thing to do. The boys have to learn and mature quickly and they invariably do and we have seen in the past two seasons our results improve as the campaign progresses and the players put what they have learned into practice.

“We have a new batch of young lads but they are a capable group and I will be looking to the players who are now in their second season to be the ones to lead the way.”

In goal for the team today will be Alastair Worby, an 18 year old who was with Coventry City last season, who has penned a one year deal with Saints.

This weekend's Under 19 fixtures:
Friday
Aberdeen V St Johnstone
Dundee United V Inverness CT (Postponed)
Dunfermline V St Mirren

Saturday

Motherwell V Hearts
Rangers V Kilmarnock
