The possibility of versatile defender Dave joining St Johnstone had been mooted on several occasions during the 2008/2009 season and that campaign had only been finished a matter of days when Mackay and his Livingston team mate Murray Davidson were recruited from the West Lothian side. Mackay started his senior career at Dens Park and over the course of five seasons he played over one hundred games for the Dark Blues as well as gaining further experience on loan to Brechin City and Arbroath. In the summer of 2004, Dave made a move south to Oxford United and enjoyed a productive season, missing only two of their forty six League Two matches. However, Dave wanted to return to Scotland for family reasons and the then Livingston manager Paul Lambert took him to the Almondvale side. Dave was a hugely influential in his four seasons with the West Lothian side but at the end of the 2008/2009 season he agreed to move to St Johnstone and he enjoyed a superbly consistent season at SPL level, highlighted by the fact that he swept the boards at the Player of the Year awards. Keen to secure such a talented player on a longer term deal, Dave was given a two year contract extension in the summer of 2010 which ties him to the club until 2013.
