Defender Steven’s senior career started when he stepped up from Dalkeith Boys Club to Dundee United in January 2001. Despite impressing many with his performances at youth and reserve team level Steven was released from Tannadice in the summer of 2004 and the then Saints Manager John Connolly had a look at him in a reserve game at Forfar (where he scored) and a few days later he appeared in the first team listed as a trialist in the match at St Mirren on 21st August. These two performances convinced Connolly that Steven was a player worth having and he initially signed until the end of that 04/05 season. Connolly’s successor Owen Coyle knew Steven from his time in charge of Dundee United's reserve side where he had appointed him captain of that side and wasted no time in securing his services for Saints for 05/06 and did so again for the 2006/2007 campaign and it was during the latter that he saw Steven really flourish into a tremendous defender. Equally competent in both the right back or a centre half role, Steven signed a one year deal for 2007/08 but the esteem in which he was held by Owen Coyle was marked in October 2007 by his signing of a two year extension to that contract. Despite the number of defenders on the books that season Steven featured in 38 of the club’s 47 matches that season. The start of 08/09 season saw Steven sidelined by injury but at the start of November he was fit enough for a place on the bench and he came on to good effect in matches against Dunfermline and Ross County. However, with Kevin Rutkiewicz, Stuart McCaffrey and Gary Irvine in great form in what proved to a Championship winning season and then arrival in January 2009 of Irish defender Graham Gartland, Steven found it difficult to get a regular game in the side. However, Steven played a significant role in our first season back in the SPL and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension in April 2010.
