Youth development
Saints will be running youth teams at Under 17, Under 16 and Under 14 levels during the 2008/2009 season and we’ll bring you details of how they progress on this website during the season.
Youth Development Manager Tommy Campbell explains the thinking behind the lowering of the age levels – Saints have fielded an Under 19 side in recent times.
Tommy says “We have dropped the Under 19s in favour of an Under 17 team this year. Derek McInnes feels this better suits his need in terms of nurturing talent for the first team and it coincides with the fact that this is the first group that I have brought through since I returned that have been together from the age of 14.”
Saints have given full-time contracts to five youngsters and are looking at a couple more. The five so far are Shaun McAllion, Chris Dodds, Martin Shields, Stephen Reynolds and Jordan Quinn. Chris, Stephen and Jordan have come through the ranks while Shaun was previously with Hearts and Martin with Hamilton Accies.
In terms of coaching, Saints first team midfielder Paul Sheerin will be in charge of the Under 17s, Gary Anderson and Derek Black will look after the Under 16s and Tam McCallum and Davie Black will be coaching the Under 14s. At the 10-12 year old level John Oswald will be looking after their needs.
The youth pre-season plans include the annual Oban and Luncarty tournaments.
