St Johnstone Women are back in action this Sunday as they welcome Queen’s Park to the McDiarmid Park Astro for a 3pm kick-off.
The Perth side head into the game with confidence after claiming their first win of the SWPL 2 season last weekend, defeating East Fife 4-2. Jodie Malcolm was among the standout performers with her display earning a place in the SWPL Team of the Week.
Reflecting on that victory, Jodie said: “It was really good to pick up our first win of the season after just a couple of games and after a disappointing result last week. I think we played well all over the pitch and everyone did what was asked of them individually and as a team. We created a lot of chances throughout the game and defensively we were disciplined. I think the effort everyone gave for the whole game made the win even more pleasing.”
Jodie continued: “It was a nice surprise to be named in the Team of the Week, I was happy with my performance on Sunday and to be able to help the team to get three points. There was some really good build up play and chances created by the team to get the ball higher up the pitch to me and the other attackers. Steffi and Lila took their chances really well when they got them.”
Looking ahead to Queen’s Park, Jodie knows Saints will need to replicate last week’s performance if they are to continue building momentum.
She said: “We know that this weekend will be a tough game but we need to take the things we did well against East Fife into this game and be aware of what Queen’s Park are good at. We want to put in another positive performance to carry on from last weekend so everyone has been working hard in training this week to prepare us for the game.”
With several new arrivals bedding into the squad over the summer, the forward also highlighted the strong team spirit developing within the group.
She added: “The new signings have done really well since coming in and settled into the team over pre-season. Each one adds something different to the team on and off the pitch and it’s great to have them with us this season. There is a good atmosphere amongst the team at training and on match days and we’re all looking forward to playing our home games at McDiarmid on the Astro.”
Saints will be aiming to build on last week’s result and put on another strong showing in front of their home support. Kick-off at the McDiarmid Astro is at 3pm.
