SMITH TRAINS THIS WEEK
26th July 2016
Derek McInnes will monitor defender Dan Smith in training this week as his search for a left-back continues.
The former Sunderland and Aberdeen player featured in the number three jersey at Cappielow on Saturday and he will train with the squad throughout this week.
Derek said this morning, “I thought he acquitted himself very well considering he had only trained with us for a couple of days. He is a free agent and did his pre-season training at Darlington and played a couple of friendlies for them but they have secured a left-back from somewhere else.
“Dan is one we had earmarked as a potential signing but I have been honest with him and explained that we have an offer in for another player. He can play a further two games as a trialist and he certainly did himself no harm on Saturday.â€
Derek is heartened that the injury list is showing signs of clearing up – Jody Morris, Collin Samuel and Steven Anderson are expected to pick up training at various points this week, leaving only Kevin Moon out of the picture.
On the Perth-born midfielder Derek says, “Mooner is having trouble with his groin and hip. He has a bit of a history with this and to be honest we are not finding a solution for him at the moment despite sending him to see specialists.â€
The manager is hoping to fix up a bounce game this week to allow Alan Main to get a match under his belt although with the SPL reserve league starting this week he may be struggling for opposition.
On the subject of Saturday’s 2-2 draw in Greenock, Derek said “It was frustrating to get within eight minutes of the win and to be honest I didn’t see them scoring. Our second half performance didn’t match the first half and I felt that a few of the players were hoping to win the game rather than making sure that we did win it with another goal. That’s something we have to work on.
“We’re a bit deflated but there was a lot to be pleased about and we have to build on those positives.â€
Saints will learn this afternoon who they will play in the second round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup. The draw takes place in Edinburgh at 2.30pm.
