Saints lose two strikers for Saturday's game at Dumfries

Saints made an inauspicious start to their Reserve League Cup campaign tonight when they were beaten 3-0 by Cowdenbeath and to make matters worse Peter MacDonald and Steven Milne were shown straight red cards and both will now miss Saturday’s trip to Dumfries.

Although the midfield and forward lines were fairly experienced, it was a mostly young line-up in defence with three teenagers in the back four and within 20 minutes they found themselves two goals in arrears, Dempster and Mackay scoring in 10 and 19 minutes respectively.

The first dismissal came in 24 minutes when Peter MacDonald was shown a red card for retaliation.

Steven Milne had the chance to reduce the leeway just after the break but saw his shot saved when one on one with the goalkeeper and within 60 seconds Cowdenbeath – who fielded former Saints Mark Baxter and John O’Neil - had killed the game as a contest with a third goal.

The miserable night was completed when Milne was shown a straight red for a tackle from behind in 64 minutes.

The closest Saints came to scoring was in the final ten minutes when Steven Reynolds back heeled the ball to Kevin Moon (pictured) but the returning midfielder saw his effort pushed onto the bar by the goalkeeper.

SAINTS: McLean, McCallion (Sullivan), Morgan, Moon, Dodd, Kerr, Jackson, McKoy, Holmes (Reynolds), Milne, MacDonald. Subs not used: Peden, Shields, Trialist
