1970's player Ian Anderson passes away

The club has been informed of the death of former player Ian Anderson – the third ex-Saint to have passed away within the past month or so, following on from Charlie McFadyen and Paddy Buckley.

Ian Anderson joined St Johnstone from Dundee in December 1975 – earlier that year he had scored the only goal of the game in the Dens Park side’s Scottish Cup win at Muirton Park.

When he joined, Saints – managed by Jackie Stewart – were already staring relegation from the inaugural Premier League in the face having lost 14 of our opening 16 matches and he managed only one league goal – ironically against Dundee – in what remained of that disastrous campaign.

The following season, 1976/77, he finished the club’s top scorer, albeit with a modest nine goals, but he left Saints to join Tampa Bay Rowdies in the first flush of soccer fever in the USA. A short spell back at Saints during 1977/78 followed before a permanent move back to the States.
