Saints have had mixed cup-tie fortunes at Ochilview in the past

It’s Co-operative Insurance Cup action tonight as Saints travel to Larbert to take on Stenhousemuir in a first round tie with a 7.30pm start.

Remarkably, this will be our first trip to Ochilview on ‘League Cup’ business for some 54 years.

The 1954/55 competitive season began with a sectional League Cup tie at Ochilview which Johnny Pattillo’s Saints won 4-2 thanks to goals from Joe Carr, Ernie Ewen, Ian Rodger and an own goal. The Saints team that day was: McLaren, Woodcock, Clark, Robertson, Riddick, Baird, Carr, Ewen, Rodger, Landles, Hodgson.

Moving forward just over 40 years, Saints were back at Ochilview in cup tie action but this time it was a Scottish Cup replay. Paul Sturrock had many fine moments as St Johnstone manager but the 7th February 1995 will not be remembered as one of them as Saints, having drawn 1-1 at McDiarmid Park a week earlier, were humbled 4-0 by The Warriors.

Let’s hope that tonight we hark back to 1954 and not 1995!
