Dundee Preview

St Johnstone host Dundee on Wednesday in what is undoubtably a must-win for both teams.

Both teams find themselves at the bottom of the Cinch Premiership with only 2 points separating Dundee from Saints. Saints will be looking to end their 10-game losing streak and leapfrog Dundee into 11th position.

Dundee come into this game after narrowly beating 10-man Dumbarton 1-0 in the Scottish Cup. A Leigh Griffiths penalty secured their place in the 5th round of the Scottish Cup.

In the league this season Dundee have struggled, having only picked up 16 points from 21 games.

Previous meetings

Saints and Dundee have met three times so far this season with Saints winning the first two games and Dundee winning the last meeting at the beginning of December.

The first meeting took place in September at Dens Park as second half goals from Shaun Rooney and Ali Crawford saw Saints progress to the semi-finals of the Premier Sports Cup.

Dundee created several good chances to take the lead but they found Zander Clark in top form in the Saints goal. Rooney gave Saints the lead with 20 minutes remaining as he got on the end of a low Liam Craig corner before slotting it past Adam Legzdins. Crawford then got his first goal for the club on 84 minutes as he sealed Saints progression to the semi-finals with a fine finish.

The sides next met at the beginning of October as Saints defeated the Dens Park side 3-1 at McDiarmid Park. It was also a special afternoon for Liam Craig as he made his 442nd appearance for Saints to become the club’s all-time appearance record holder. Saints were 2-0 up by half time thanks to a Chris Kane double. The Saints forward gave Saints the lead on 31 minutes as he finished a great team move, converting a Michael O’Halloran cut-back. Then 8 minutes later Kane scored his and Saints second as he got on the end of Stevie May’s ball across the face of the Dundee goal. May then ended the game as a contest 40 seconds in the second half as he produced a fine finish, after being setup by O’Halloran. Dee defender Ryan Sweeney pulled a goal back for the visitors with 16 minutes remaining however, Saints were able to see the game out to ensure Liam Craig tasted victory on his special day.

The last meeting between the sides took place at the beginning of last month as Dundee won 1-0 at Dens Park. The only goal of the game came 6 minutes before half time as Danny Mullen despatched a low strike on the turn beyond Zander Clark which brought an end to Saints seven game unbeaten run against their Tayside rivals.
