Jason Holt is the new captain of St Johnstone Football Club.
The experienced midfielder, who has made over 50 appearances for us, officially takes hold of the armband for our first league game of the season against Partick Thistle.
Head coach Simo Valakari has also selected Sven Sprangler and Morgan Boyes as vice-captains.
“I’m very privileged to be given the responsibility to captain this football club,” said Jason.
“I’m grateful to the gaffer and the coaching staff for thinking that I am the right person to lead this team forward. I realise the responsibility that comes with the role but feel that I am more than ready to take it on.
“To be given the responsibility and looked upon as the person to lead the team means a great deal to me. I’m very proud.”
Jason added: “I’m officially club captain but everyone will need to lead and help as the season progresses.
“Sven is more than capable of leading this team – he has shown that – and Morgan has shown real leadership qualities on and off the pitch since he has come into the club.
“I feel like we have a good blend in that leadership group – and it is one that can help the whole club.”
Currently in his second spell at McDiarmid Park, Jason has a strong understanding of what St Johnstone Football Club means to the people of Perth.
He said: “I have witnessed how much this football club means to everyone around the stadium and around the city. It is up to us as a playing group to put in good performances on the pitch.
“Even in the difficult times last season, the fans always backed us. We have sold more season tickets this season, so they are really coming out in their numbers to support the team.
“It’s the responsibility of myself and the team to give the fans something to cheer – we’ll make sure we do that.”
Jason shared his and the squad’s excitement for the start of our league campaign at McDiarmid Park this Saturday.
He explained: “We can’t wait. Myself and all of the players and itching to get back out there. We’ve done well in the cup games but now it is down to league business.”
