St Johnstone WFC manager Josh Henderson hailed his players’ character after fighting right until the end to secure a 2-1 win against East Fife.

The three points hauled the Saints out of the relegation playoff zone and above their visitors on a dramatic afternoon at McDiarmid Park.

Elvie McLean had opened the scoring before East Fife levelled with time running short. But Ellie MacIver clinched victory in the 93rd minute.

Henderson said: “Rollercoaster is probably the right word. I think we went through every emotion in the game.

“Full credit goes to the players for fighting right until the very end. It is a long season, but I couldn’t be any prouder of them.

“First half, I couldn’t fault them. They stuck to everything we had talked about, although we were probably a little disappointed that we weren’t further ahead.

“East Fife kept battling and made it a tough game. They pushed us right until the end. I was just delighted for everyone at the end.

“You could see the relief. I know how hard the players work and they set themselves high standards.”

Henderson made sure to thank the supporters who backed the team throughout.

He said: “When you score that late, there are always going to be chaotic celebrations. Every single supporter at the game was brilliant for us.

“We’ve talked about our support all season – and I can’t thank them enough. They have backed us right until the end and we really do appreciate it.

“We want to keep pushing. We obviously wanted to be higher up the table but, now that we have stayed in the league, we need to build and push ourselves further.”
