Head coach Simo Valakari was delighted with the application and efforts of his players after Saints ground out a big point on the road against Kilmarnock.
We had to play the majority of the match with ten men after Toby Steward was shown a red card for handling the ball outside of the penalty area.
Goals from Danny Schmidt and Joel Cotterill ensured a point was gained from the match and speaking after the game, Simo said:
“Our team did it for Toby and they did it for Taylor Steven who I needed to take out. We are all here playing for each other.
“We have got each others’ backs when things happen. That tells me they are ready to accept any responsibility.
“Of course, because of the circumstances, this feels like the biggest result so far.
“Playing away, 80 minutes one man short and because of my substitutions, we didn’t have anyone left.
“Danny played the last 20 minutes but couldn’t move (because of an ankle injury) so we basically played two men short.
“That’s football, you need to do it. We want to win matches to move up the table but sometimes you need to be very satisfied for the point – and I am.
“Because there were a lot of things that you couldn’t really control.”
Simo added: “It was a long afternoon, a lot of running. Especially twice going behind with one man short, working your way back in.
“The most disappointing moment was the end of the half when we got our way back into the game and the next attack, we let them score.
“It would be so easy to feel sorry for ourselves – that we can’t do this and we are one man short.
“But the boys showed they never doubted that and it was a great goal we scored with Joel. We needed our luck.
“They missed some chances and Ross made great saves. We worked so hard, intercepting, winning duels.”
