Livingston match preview

St Johnstone welcome Livingston to McDiarmid Park for our next Cinch Premiership match.

Both teams return to action after the recent international break. Livingston’s last league outing was a 2-0 defeat away to Hearts. Within three minutes Hearts were ahead through Baningime. Liam Boyce picked out Ellis Simms, whose ball across goal was not dealt with and Baningime knocked the ball in from the poor clearance. Hearts doubled their lead when McKay hit a sensational volley over his shoulder into the top corner.

The loss was Livingston second in a row, leaving them in 6th place with all the teams around in touching distance.

St Johnstone grabbed the three points in spectacular fashion with a Callum Hendry brace. Motherwell went ahead on the 12th minute when Kevin van Veen sent a low 25-yard effort into the bottom corner.

However, Saints fought back and Callum Hendry had Saints level on 21minutes with a brilliant front post header after getting on the end of a Melker Hallberg cross. Hendry got his second late in stoppage time with a brilliant left footed volley to seal a late win. The victory keeps a four point gap between Saints and Dundee.

Callum Davidson spoke to the press about the weekends fixture:

"All games at the minute are tight, you can see that from the last game against Motherwell. You just have to prepare, relax and play with that confidence we know we can.

Getting 1000 local kids in the Ormond stand is great to see.  It’s always brilliant to get as many young fans along to the football and get them to a game. I think with COVID it’s been difficult but it’s the type of thing that the club always try to do. Hopefully we can get the result and get a few of them to come back.

Cammy MacPherson trained all week after he picked up a little knock in training which meant he missed the Motherwell game. James Brown is touch and go, he had a bit of trouble with his hamstring when he was away with Malta. Apart from that we have a good, strong, squad to pick from."

Dan Cleary spoke about the clubs position ahead of the visit of Livingston:

"That is the mentality that we have to have, we need to look up and not down.

“If you stick a few results together in this league – look at other clubs that were around us, they climbed the table, so hopefully we can do that.

“Everyone can’t wait to get back and push on for the next seven games.

“Anything is possible, if we keep winning games we can climb the table.

“We have to believe that it is possible that we can stay out of relegation and play-offs. I think it is possible and so do the team.

“We are four points ahead, but we just need to take it game by game and get as many points as possible in the next seven games.”
