Match Preview: St Johnstone vs Rangers

After an international break, which saw four of our current senior squad called up to their national teams, we host Rangers in the early kick-off today.

This is the first meeting between the double cup winners and the reigning league champions this season.

Callum Davidson will be looking at the return to league football as a fresh start, after only picking up three points before the break.

Sadly we saw the departure of two club legends during deadline day, double winning captain Jason Kerr and midfield starlet Ali McCann, but some new additions have come in to bolster the squad. Ali Crawford arrived on-loan from Bolton Wanderers, Lars Dendoncker joined from Brighton, St Mirren’s Cammy MacPherson joined on-loan and Finnish under 21 international Eetu Vertainen joined permanently.

The Gers come into this game off the back of a win against old firm rivals Celtic. Filip Helander’s thunderous header in the 66th minute was all that separated the sides.

Saints were in Paisley last time out where they came away with one point after a scoreless draw. Callum Davidson’s men had a slow start to the game but they created more chances in the second half. Their performance was capped off by a wonderfully struck free-kick which clattered off the crossbar.

The last fixture between the two was a memorable one. Callum Davidson’s men equalised with Gers in the dying embers of extra-time during their meeting in the Scottish Cup quarter-final. Zander Clark’s heroics continued in the penalty shoot-out where he made two vital saves, sealing St Johnstone’s place in the semi-final.

Hopefully the clash today will see another upset take place.
