Premier Sports Cup Semi-Final Preview

The wait is finally over Saints fans. St Johnstone return to Hampden Park for the fifth time in a year, this time they will be backed by the roar of a  travelling support willing the team to make history again.

Last season, Callum Davidson’s side lifted the League Cup which was just the first step in what would be a historic double-winning campaign.

The current champions started their trophy defence at Gayfield where they were taken to the limit by Arbroath. After a back-and-forth 120 minutes between the two sides, which ended in a 2-2 draw, the ref blew his whistle for penalties. The Angus side missed three of their penalties whilst Ali McCann fired Saints into the next round with a wonderfully struck spot-kick.

Tayside rivals Dundee were now the only club in the way of St Johnstone and a place at Hampden.

The Perth men dominated the 90 minutes. Cup competition hero Shaun Rooney opened the scoring in the 70th minute before new signing Ali Crawford doubled the lead six minutes from time.

Saints are now one game from their third final in a year, however, they face a resurging Celtic side later today.

St Johnstone will have an air of confidence about them as they have a 100% record at the national stadium, a record Callum Davidson will be wanting to keep.
