Reece McAlear and Ruari Paton were both on the scoresheet on Saturday as we defeated Ayr United 3-1 at McDiarmid Park in the William Hill Championship.

Reece kicked off our afternoon with a rising strike from the edge of the box and Ruari rounded off the win with a composed finish in the 86th minute. Cheick Diabate was our other goal scorer.

“It was a tough one, but we got the job done,” said Ruari. “Big Reece got a great goal to kick us off and then we responded well after Ayr got level.

“We got there in the end with a late securing goal. It wasn’t a bad day at the office.

“A goal means a lot at the best of times but it was nice to get another one for the club. At the end of the day we won and that is the main thing.”

On his goal, Reece explained: “I had exactly the same chance in training yesterday and I hit it straight over the bar. I just tried to keep this one as low as possible and thankfully it went in.

“It is nice to get that winning feeling back again and it it is a big win for us.”

On the importance of the fans, Reece added: “It is nine cup finals we have left, we need the fans behind us of course.

“The fans have been our 12th man all season and my message to them is to just stick with us.”
