Stevie Mallan admits it was an emotional moment when his free-kick found the back of the net against Partick Thistle on Saturday afternoon.

His stunning top-corner effort rounded off the scoring in our William Hill Championship opener at McDiarmid Park.

Stevie, a summer arrival, spent a considerable amount of time out of action across the past year due to injury.

Speaking about the free-kick and the feeling of scoring again, he said: “It is something I have worked on my full career.

“It was a bit emotional when I scored because I had been out of the game for a long time. It’s amazing to be back and back scoring goals.”

On the 5-1 win, he added: “We played really well, especially after going 1-0 down. The reaction from the boys showed how hard we have worked in pre-season to attack and score goals. To put in a performance like that at home was brilliant.

“When you have momentum and are playing well as a team, you need to go and get as many goals as possible. You never want to be lackadaisical.

“We’re an attacking side so I’m glad we were able to get the five goals – and off the back of scoring eight against Elgin. The boys have momentum and we’ll look to take that into Ross County.”

The Saints head for Dingwall on Friday night for a 7.45pm kick-off.

Stevie said: “The teams have come down from the Premiership and there will be emphasis on both to do well.

“They have brought in a lot of good, quality players. But we need to take the positivity from the cup games and our first league game into Friday night. The boys are firing and looking forward to it.”
