The under-19s were defeated 4-2 by Dundee in the CAS Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

Held at the Regional Performance Centre, this was a rearranged fixture after last week’s contest had been abandoned at half-time due to the weather.

While the rain was again tumbling down on this occasion, playing conditions were much more favourable.

The hosts had started brightly and nudged into the lead with just six minutes played, but the Saints response was a positive one.

Forward Murray Binnie had a shot on the swivel saved before he then levelled proceedings on 18 minutes.

He was found at the left-hand side of the box by a neat Hector Ashworth pass and, after cutting inside onto his right foot, sent a neat finish low beyond the goalkeeper.

There were soon strong appeals for a penalty when Binnie hit the deck inside the box, but the referee waved play on.

Dundee had a couple of half chances early in the second period but goalkeeper Kyle Thomson was well-positioned on both occasions.

Saints were inches from taking the lead in the 72nd minute when Dougal McAdam’s terrific strike came down off the underside of the crossbar before the danger was cleared.

Just five minutes later, Dundee struck and regained the lead with a low finish into the bottom corner.

There was, however, an instant response. Fran Franczak produced a piece of brilliance to fire an effort into the top corner and suddenly the scoreboard was tied up again.

The game was finely poised but it was Dundee who would add further goals in the 83rd minute and in stoppage time to round off a 4-2 win.

Saints starting XI: Thomson, Brookfield, Martin, Russell, Murray, Ashworth, Preston, Franczak, Louden, Binnie, McAdam.
