SAINTS IN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORTS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

One of our most successful projects which demonstrates the positive effects that sport can have on improving your mental wellbeing and aiding your recovery, is our SAINTS Mental Wellbeing football squad. First established with a small group of participants from Murray Royal Hospital in 2010, the group has now expanded significantly with players participating from across the area at their weekly coaching sessions at McDiarmid Field Turf led by former Northern Ireland internationalist Danny Griffin and his team of coaches. The group also has 2 teams participating in the Scottish FA Mental Wellbeing league with similar teams from across the country at their regular monthly fixtures. After 3 rounds of fixtures this season both our teams are currently featuring in the top half of the table, more importantly however, we are pleased that this project has given all who take part a sense of purpose and enjoyment with many new friendships being formed which offer an invaluable level of support for all concerned. We’ve also been able to offer an opportunity for a number of the group to undertake a Level 1 coaching course themselves over the last few years and they are now using these skills with their peers. New players are always welcome at the session which takes place on a Wednesday from 3.30pm – 5pm.

SCOTTISH FA COACH EDUCATION COURSES

Following on from the work carried out by the St. Johnstone Community Department since the early 1990's, The Trust, in partnership with the Scottish FA, provides support to potential coaches through Scottish F.A. Coaching Courses as well as In Service Training. We offer Scottish F.A. Coach Education Courses that give local coaches the opportunity to progress to level 1.3 qualification.

The following Courses take place in coming weeks and are for adults aged 16+

Level 1.2 Coaching Young Footballers £60 (£26 quality mark) McDiarmid Park Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th May 10.00am – 4.00pm each day

Level 1.3 Coaching in the Game £60 (£26 quality mark) McDiarmid Park Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June 10.00am – 4.00pm each day For more details and to book a place go to www.scottishfa.co.uk

FOOTBALL MEMORIES

This award-winning project is aimed at helping people of all ages who would benefit from social interaction (for example, those living in isolation or with a condition such as dementia or recovering from a stroke) by reviving memories of players, matches, goals and incidents from football matches from days gone by.

A new block of free sessions is underway in Crieff and will meet every Tuesday up until June 13th from 10am until 11.30am in the Strathearn Campus.

The sessions in Perth take place in the Executive Suite at McDiarmid Park also from 10.00am until 11.30am and run until Thursday 6th July. As with any proper football occasion, refreshments are served at half time!

Get in touch if you know of a relative, friend or colleague who might enjoy coming along to Football Memories 01738 459095.
