Saints' Development side were defeated 3-1 by Tayside rivals Dundee at Station Park (Forfar) yesterday afternoon in the SPFL Development League.

Craig Wighton scored after eight minutes for the Dark Blues before Joe Johnson (pictured) got St. Johnstone's equaliser just two minutes later.

Wighton got his second of the game just before half time to make it 2-1 and with six minutes left Josh Skelly sealed the win for Dundee with a curling effort from 25 yards out.

Alistair Stevenson, head of the Saints youth academy, said: "We started really well against a strong and experienced Dundee team. (Michael) Coulson and (Paul) Simpson both had chances before Dundee went ahead against the run of play.

"Joe Johnson scored just after that. Joe played the ball to Craig Thomson, who did well to run through and get a good shot away. The shot was saved but the keeper spilled the ball to Johnson who tapped it in from close range.

"Dundee finished the half strongly and scored from a corner. In the second half we competed well but they scored late on to make it 3-1.

"Craig Thomson did well when it was 2-1 to get a good shot away, which came off the underside of the bar. If that had gone in it would have been level and a completely different game. I felt there were a number of good performances from the team, which we will take into Friday's game away to Ross County."
