We advanced to the second round of the Scottish Youth Cup on Tuesday evening thanks to a comfortable 7-1 victory against Penicuik Athletic.
Dougal McAdam grabbed the headlines at Montgomery Park with a hat-trick but this was a real team performance with Danny Gray, Kai Hughes, Darryl McMutrie and Trialist also on the scoresheet.
Saints showed determination from the first whistle and threatened on a couple of early occasions before Gray found the bottom corner from the edge of the box for the opener with 14 minutes on the clock.
A second arrived shortly after when McAdam nudged inside and fired an unstoppable left-footed effort beyond the goalkeeper. It was a crisp strike from the winger.
The Aberfeldy local doubled up for the night – our third – with a composed right-footed finish after weaving around a couple of Penicuik challenges.
Saints were not in the mood for taking their foot off the gas and Hughes rounded the ‘keeper before slotting into an empty net not long after the half hour mark.
McAdam secured his hat-trick in the 64th minute when he kept his cool from the penalty spot after Gray had been tripped inside the box.
Then McMurtie managed to get his name on the scoresheet with a finish from close-range after a terrific run and cross from Trialist down the left flank.
That same Trialist would round off the scoring in the 84th minute. He broke clear of the home defence and sent a left-footed strike from inside the box beyond the reach of the ‘keeper.
Saints: Gay, Martin (c), Trialist (Wilson 77), Russell, Harrington (Crawford 52), Garden (Taylor 77), Gray (Young 77), McMurtie, Hughes (Trialist 59), Gallagher, McAdam.
