St Johnstone WFC opened their ScottishPower Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 season with a 3-1 victory over Livingston on Sunday.
Despite falling behind, goals from Lucy Livie, Elvie McLean and Jodie Malcolm ensured it was a positive and winning opening to the new campaign.
Speaking after the game, head coach Josh Henderson said: “We are all delighted to get the victory today. I thought we deserved it due to the work rate we put in and a lot of our play was very good.
“Livi probably deserved to take the lead, but once we settled we grew into the game.
“The character we showed is something we have discussed a lot. We felt sometimes last season when we went a goal down heads would drop, rather than stepping up and pushing against it.
“We did that today. We managed those setbacks very well today.
“The size of our squad was important today as well. Everyone needed to be ready and everyone played their part.
“I am proud of this squad and the togetherness that is there. We need to keep up those levels now.”
Elvie McLean scored a stunning strike from 25-yards to edge Saints into the lead in the contest and she was delighted with the overall performance of the team.
She added: “I thought we did really well, especially to come from a goal behind in the match.
“It is nice to get the season off to a winning start and hopefully we can now build on this going forward.
“I was a wee bit frustrated with some of my attempts before the goal, so when the space opened up I just hit it and obviously it went in. I am really happy with it.
“The effort from everyone was absolutely amazing. It is a real positive start for us and now it is something for us to build on.”
