SAINTS WANT TO AVOID KILLIE WHITEWASH

SAINTS WANT TO AVOID KILLIE WHITEWASH

26th July 2016

St Johnstone face Kilmarnock tomorrow

Tomorrow, for the third time this season, Saints head to Rugby Park and there is plenty of incentive for the players to turn in a winning performance.

Along with Celtic, the Ayrshire side are the only SPL who have beaten Saints in all three games so far and so Saints will be out to ensure that they don’t complete a clean sweep of wins.

For Killie, the game is vital as they attempt to haul themselves away from the foot of the table and although we are safe from such concerns, the manager is determined to see his side finish in seventh place – not least because of the financial implications – and that could yet lead to an intriguing last day clash with Hamilton Accies in Perth.

Derek McInnes has last week’s squad available to him plus free-from-suspension Michael Duberry and striker Steven Milne who came through and scored in the midweek closed door game against Hearts.

Stuart McCaffrey is back in full training but the game comes just too soon for him.

Saints will be without goalkeeper Alan Main whose midweek hand injury rules him out of his place on the bench – that role will go to one of the two Under 19 keepers – Zander Clark and Neil Duffy.

More significantly, the chipped bone and torn ligament hand injury sustained while stopping a shot in training looks like it will rob the record-breaking keeper of an appearance before the end of the season.

Manager Derek McInnes admits that it was in his mind to give Main an outing before the end of the campaign and says “I’m very disappointed for Alan. He has served this club very well over the years and I can sense his disappointment at this turn of events. The timing is so unfortunate.”

THE LAST TIME: Rugby Park has not been a happy hunting ground this season and our last visit there in February ended in disappointment when we twice let a goal lead slip and then lost a late goal to see the home side keep all the points.

Kevin Kyle has been the main cause of our lack of success this season – he has netted in all three encounters so far.

KILMARNOCK: Bell, Clancy (Sammon), Hay, Ford, Bryson, Invincible (Taouil), Kelly, Hamill, Severin, Kyle (Old), Maguire. Subs not used: Comb, Fowler, Fernandez, Kiernan

Referee: Stevie O’Reilly

THIS WEEK'S OTHER SPL GAMES: Hibernian v Hearts, 12.30 Aberdeen v Hamilton Celtic v Motherwell Dundee Utd v Rangers Falkirk v St Mirren
