Motherwell Match Preview

Saints travel to Fir Park this Saturday for our first away game of the cinch Premiership season.

A last minute Hibs goal saw ten-man Saints slip to defeat on the opening day of the new cinch Premiership season this afternoon. Saints were reduced to ten men just before the hour mark as Murray Davidson was sent off for a late challenge on Ryan Porteous.

The new look Saints backline defended well however, Hibs pressure eventually told in the final minute of the match as substitute Josh Campbell headed home via a deflection off Cammy MacPherson to had the visitors all 3 points.

Motherwell come into the game with a 1-0 victory over St Mirren. Liam Kelly's heroic performance between the sticks kept the Fir Park side in the game for large spells. Kevin Van Veen’s goal from the spot was enough to split the teams as the ‘Well finished the game with 10 men, with Ricki Lamie seeing red late on.

Managers pre-match thoughts:

“I thought there were a lot of positives to take from the game. It was a whole new backline including Remi in goals, I thought they had a solid game. There’s a mix of experience there and also youthful energy, we have a balance there.

“It’s always tricky coming up against a side with no manager, it’s almost a bit of the unknown. We will prepare for all different scenarios as we always do and go into the game with the intention of winning the 3-points.

“Liam Gordon and Ali Crawford will be back which we’re pleased at. We want as much competition for positions as we can.”

Remi Matthews pre-match thoughts

“It was a hectic couple of days since I signed, it was a very quick turnaround. Sometimes that’s the best way to settle into a club and it definitely was here.

“It felt really good to get back playing first team football after so long without. With a completely new defence I thought they played excellent. We were very disappointed not to take anything from the game, especially losing the goal so late on.

“Sometimes playing against a team without a manager brings a different element to the game. We just have to concentrate on ourselves and if we go in with confidence we can get a result.”
