Supporting Trussell FC: Football vs Hunger
2nd April 2025

As a club, we are rooted in our community and care about our fans which is why we believe that hunger has no place in Perth or in the UK as a whole.
Yet one in seven people are experiencing hunger and hardship and it’s likely that many of our community are struggling to afford the essentials.
It is not right that some of our fans will be skipping meals in order to be able to feed their kids, or having to choose between putting on the heating or the bus fare to work.
That is why St Johnstone Football Club is supporting ‘Football vs Hunger’, a campaign led by anti-poverty charity Trussell who work alongside a community of more than 1400 food banks across the UK.
The campaign aims to unite the football community and call for urgent action to relegate hunger to history.
Football has a proud history of leading the way in shaping a better society, by uniting as one voice. Our fans and the work of Saints Fans Supporting Foodbanks do us proud every day.
But food alone is not the answer, and that is why we are committed to helping to end hunger by signing the Football vs Hunger charter and we hope you will join us.
By joining this campaign, St Johnstone Football Club and our fans will again stand together to say that it’s simply not acceptable that anybody should experience hunger in the UK.
Francis Smith, CEO of St Johnstone FC, said: “Football has a proud history of leading the way in shaping a better society, by uniting as one voice.
“Food banks are a lifeline for people facing hardship – but they’re not the solution. All of us at St Johnstone FC believe that everyone should have enough money to afford the essentials and that there shouldn’t be a single person in our community who has to experience hunger.
“Everyone at the club is so proud of how Saints fans already rally to support the local food bank. That’s why we want to encourage you to join football’s fight against hunger, and sign for Trussell FC – the only other team we’ll wholeheartedly encourage you to support.”
Ellie Lambert, Head of Activations at Trussell, said: “Football clubs sit at the heart of almost every community in Scotland, that’s why we are delighted that St Johnstone are choosing to show their support for Football vs Hunger.
“The club and its incredible fans have a long history of supporting Perth and Kinross Foodbank and week in, week out, it makes a huge difference to people who can’t afford the essentials, making Saints fans the top community donor to the food bank in 2024.”
