PREVIEW | Saints v Motherwell

27th September 2019

Friday 27 September 2019

Next up for Saints it's Motherwell tomorrow afternoon at McDiarmid Park as the Club looks to record our first Ladbrokes Premiership of the campaign.

Last Sunday, Tommy Wright's side conceded four second half goals to fall to a 0-4 defeat to Rangers while tomorrow's opponents were also defeated, losing to Ross County in Dingwall.

Saints currently occupy 12th spot in the table after three draws and three defeats from the opening six matches, with Motherwell in 4th place on 10 points.

TEAM NEWS

After being ineligible last weekend against his parent club, Jason Holt returns to the squad and is expected to start at McDiarmid Park tomorrow.

The only player missing is Liam Craig who has a groin injury. David Wotherspoon, Scott Tanser, Drey Wright and Stevie May all sustained minor knocks during last Sunday's match with Rangers but have trained this week and will be fit and ready for selection tomorrow.

It means the Manager has almost a full squad to choose from and hinted to Saints TV earlier today that he may make one or two changes from the Rangers defeat.

PRE-MATCH INTERVIEWS

The Manager: "Everyone knows it's not an ideal situation that we're in at the moment. We're still searching for that first win and it's vitally important we get that sooner rather than later.

"Tomorrow is a good opportunity to do just that against a Motherwell side that has started the season in good form.

"However, it's a game that we should be going into expecting to be good enough to get the three points regardless of the current position we sit in the table.

"The belief is there in the squad that we can get the result and we've prepared well all week.

"We all know it's been a tough start in terms of who we've had to play but ultimately we've made too many individual errors and that's something we have to eradicate.

"If we can cut out the individual errors then I'm sure we will pick up the points that will see us climb up the table."

Michael O'Halloran: "Last week was disappointing in terms of the result but I don't think it was as bad as the scoreline suggests.

"We lost silly goals and that's something that has to stop but we've trained well this week and hopefully tomorrow can be the day we get that first win.

"Motherwell have had some good results and are playing well so we know it'll be a tough match.

"We know the threat they pose and they're a big physical team but we're well prepared and we're ready for the game."

HEAD-TO-HEAD

It was a mixed bag of results last season between the clubs, with both sides winning two matches each.

Saints defeated Motherwell 1-0 at Fir Park last October which was the spark that ignited a hot streak for Tommy Wright's men who went on an eight-match-unbeaten-run.

Jason Kerr scored that day and he was on target again at McDiarmid Park in December but that proved to be a consolation in a 1-2 defeat to the Steelmen.

It was back to Fir Park in March and this time the North Lanarkshire outfit came out 3-0 winners.

However, Saints had the final say with a 2-0 home win in May which confirmed a 7th place finish for Tommy Wright's men confining Motherwell to 8th place.

Overall there have been 164 meetings between the clubs in all competitions with tomorrow's visitors enjoying the better record.

Motherwell have won 79 times to 52 Saints victories. The fixture has ended all square on 33 occasions.
