Eirinn McCafferty: We can be proud of performance

Eirinn McCafferty was proud of how St Johnstone WFC performed in Wednesday’s ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2 match against Queen’s Park at McDiarmid Park.

Saints battled hard and right to the end in front of a great home crowd but were edged out 1-0 by champions Queen’s Park.

The experience, however, was a special one for the team and defender McCafferty made sure to thank everyone who turned out to spectate.

“Throughout the game I thought we matched Queen’s Park,” she said. “In spells they had the upper hand, then we had the upper hand. It was quite end-to-end.

“We can be proud of ourselves because we did really well on Wednesday night. It felt like an equaliser was coming and we kept going right to the very end. It never came off for us but that is football sometimes.”

McCafferty hopes the occasion has helped to inspire the next generation even more.

She continued: “It was an amazing experience and such a good thing for the women’s game, for me personally, for the girls and the people who came to watch.

“It is certainly something we want to keep happening, especially for the next generation. It was a great thing to see. Inspiring the younger generation is a really big thing and getting more young girls involved.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came to the game. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the win but the support meant a lot.”
