Head to Head: Aberdeen v Saints
7th December 2018
Saints take on Aberdeen this afternoon at Pittodrie in what will be the 165th meeting between the two clubs.
The sides met earlier this season at McDiarmid Park when David McMillan's opener was cancelled out by a Niall McGinn equaliser in a 1-1 draw.
Saints go into the match looking to make in eight games unbeaten in the Ladbrokes Premiership while Aberdeen will also be on a high following Derek McInnes' side's 1-0 victory at Ibrox midweek.
HISTORY
The head to head shows that over the years Aberdeen have had the better of matches against Saints with 78 victories to Saints' 38. On 48 occasions the fixture has ended in a draw.
There have been some memorable fixtures between the clubs over the years that Saints have come out on top in - Scottish Cup Semi-Final of course - and some of games have produced plenty of goals too.
Back in 1990 in what is regarded by many as being one of the best games played at McDiarmid Park, Saints hit Aberdeen for five in the old Scottish Premier Division.
The goals came from Roddy Grant (2), Mark Treanor (2) and Steve Maskrey in what was the first win for Saints against Aberdeen since April 1976.
Towards the end of the 1990s there was another memorable goalfest at McDiarmid when - in January 1999 - Gary Bollan, Alan Kernaghan and John O'Neill (2) were on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win over The Dons. Jamie Buchan had put the visitors ahead before Sandy Clark's men scored four without reply.
One that will stick in the minds of Saints fans was our trip to Pittodrie in October 2015 when Tommy Wright's men defeated Derek McInnes' side 5-1.
The goalscorers that day were Brian Easton, Joe Shaughnessy, Liam Craig and Steven MacLean (2) in what was Saints' biggest ever win at Pittodrie.
TOMMY WRIGHT RECORD
Tommy Wright and Derek McInnes are the two longest serving managers in the Scottish Premiership and have pitted their wits against each other since the 2013/14 season.
Until last season the head to head record was fairly even but a dominant 2017/18 campaign for Aberdeen where The Dons won all three matches has changed the landscape.
Tommy Wright has 6 victories compared to Derek McInnes' 10, with 7 draws between the sides in the past five years.
Saints will be looking for their first victory over Aberdeen since April 2017 when Danny Swanson and Craig Thomson scored in a 2-0 victory at Pittodrie.
Today's match is a 3PM kick-off at Pittodrie and the referee is Don Robertson.
