Reaction: Liam Gordon and Dimitar Mitov on securing Premiership status

Proud captain Liam Gordon hailed the fight and character shown to secure Premiership safety on Sunday.

We defeated Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park – Nicky Clark and Adama Sidibeh with the goals - to clinch a massively important three points on the road.

With Ross County failing to defeat Aberdeen, we dramatically jumped up to 10th in the standings which ensures we return for a 16th consecutive campaign in the top-flight of Scottish football.

“You could see the effort everyone has shown and the nice relationship and connection with the fans at the end,” Gordon said. “As you can imagine, we are all delighted.

“I can’t put into words the love and affection you have for your team-mates. Especially in a game like that when everyone was battling.

“Those are the kind of performances you are proud of as a captain. I’m delighted and so proud to call these guys team-mates.”

Player of the year Dimitar Mitov played another key role on Sunday, including saving a Theo Bair first half penalty.

“Dimi has been absolutely outstanding for us,” Gordon added. “Big players turn up in big moments but he has delivered for us all season.

“On Sunday, he was amazing. The penalty save was huge and it gave us another lift at the right time to kick on.”

Mitov said: “We can talk about the penalty save but the blocks the boys put in are as good as goals. It is about the whole unit at the back – they have been amazing.

“The passion of the boys was shown when we were making blocks and everyone was celebrating together.

“I wanted to be safe much earlier in the season but, doing it in this way, gave that happy moment for the fans.

“They deserved it because they have travelled home and away, supporting us in difficult times. Those celebrations were for them.”

On his performances across the full season, he added: “I have just played as well as I can. The hardest thing in football is being consistent with your performances every week.

“Being consistent is what we talk about with the goalkeepers. Every single game it is about high standards. That is how you push forward.”
