Rooney reflects on League Cup triumph

Cup double winning goal hero Shaun Rooney has reflected on the club’s League Cup triumph on the three-year anniversary of our first trophy lift of the 2020/21 season.

Saints historically lifted both the Scottish Cup and League Cup under the leadership of Callum Davidson three years ago in one of the greatest achievements in Scottish football history.

Rooney scored the winning goal in both finals that season and reflecting on his trophy-laden spell in Perth, the defender admits the memories will last a lifetime.

Now at Fleetwood Town, Rooney told Saints TV: “It seems like longer ago than three years. Time just goes by so fast doesn’t it?

“The League Cup victory kick started everything that season. We played Livingston a couple of weeks before the final. After beating them we then headed into the final in high spirits.

“We were confident and obviously we went on to win it. It was a special day. I haven’t watched it back to be honest. I’ll wait until I retire to relive those memories.

“I have great memories of the winning goal. I’m sure I won the corner and Craig Conway whipped it in.

“I was up against Jack Fitzwater and I got my head to it. It was the only thing I was good at to be honest!”

Rooney currently stays with former club captain Jason Kerr and both are reminded of their achievements at Saints on a daily basis.

Rooney added: “I live with big Jason Kerr. His strip from the game is up on the wall so I am constantly reminded of the success we had that season.

“It was such a special season, the best of my career and the rest of the team too.

“Winning the two cups, top six, and then our European adventure the next season against Galatasaray and Lask. The highlight of my career for sure.”
