Unbeaten record in sight this weekend
13th December 2018
Last weekend's 2-0 victory at Pittodrie made it eight games without defeat for Saints and Tommy Wright's men could equal the club's top flight unbeaten record on Saturday if they can avoid defeat at home to Motherwell.
It was against this weekend's opponents that the current run started with Jason Kerr's last minute header giving Saints a 1-0 victory at Fir Park back in October.
They followed that result up with a 2-0 home victory against St. Mirren before back-to-back 1-0 away wins at Livingston and Hibs.
A week later Saints put four past Hamilton without reply at McDiarmid Park heading into the international break with five successive victories and clean sheets.
A 0-0 home stalemate with Kilmarnock came next before Hearts became the first side to score against the club in six matches in a 2-2 midweek draw.
Goals from captain Joe Shaughnessy and Blair Alston secured a 2-0 victory at Pittodrie last Saturday extending the run to eight matches ahead of this weekend's visit of Motherwell.
TOP FLIGHT UNBEATEN RECORD - HISTORY
The club's current top flight unbeaten record stands at nine matches which has been achieved on three occasions by three different managers, with Tommy Wright looking to become the fourth.
Tommy Muirhead set the current record back in 1933 with Saints playing in the old Division One. A 3-0 victory at Muirton Park against Falkirk on 23rd August 1933 kickstarted the run and an impressive 4-1 triumph over Third Lanark on 7th October - again at Muirton Park - made it nine games without defeat.
The run ended the following week away to Ayr United when Saints lost 3-2.
Twenty-seven-years on and Muirhead's record was matched by Bobby Brown. On October 8th 1960, a home win against Hibs kickstarted the run which was eventually ended by Motherwell in a 2-0 defeat at Fir Park.
In 1993, the club went nine games unbeaten in the Premier Division under John McClelland although only one of those matches ended in a Saints win - a 3-1 victory at McDiarmid Park against Hearts - with the other eight ending in a draw.
That record started at the end of the 1992/93 season and stretched into the 1993/94 campaign before it was ended by a 2-1 defeat to Rangers at McDiarmid Park.
You can see if the manager Tommy Wright and his players can equal the current club record on Saturday when Saints welcome Motherwell to McDiarmid Park. Kick-off is at 3PM.
