St Johnstone WFC Player of the Year awards

St Johnstone WFC’s end of season presentation evening, sponsored by Sidey, was held at Craigie Hill Golf Club on Friday.

Presented with two awards each on the night were Ellie May Cowie and Alix Moodie, while Rebecca Robertson was also among the winners.

Ellie May was named top goal scorer and also received the player of the year award from Sam Miller and Danny Williams of the Dogger Saints Podcast.

She smiled: “Winning the top scorer award for a wing-back isn’t too bad. The season was a bit of a frustrating one for us and I think we could have done much better.

“There were games where we lost silly goals and that ended up costing us. Finishing fifth was not where we wanted to be but hopefully better things are to come next season.”

Alix’s sensational strike against Gartcairn secured the goal of the season and she then picked up the coaches’ player of the year accolade.

“It is nice to get recognition from the coaches for all the hard work you put in,” Alix explained. “But it is not just credit to me, it is credit to all the girls. Everyone puts in the work.

“It was a frustrating season in the end but the girls all stuck together. We’ll take the positives out of everything. Feeling negative will never get you anywhere.

“We maybe lacked quality at times but everyone in the dressing room is brilliant, so hopefully there are good things to come next season.”

Rebecca’s strong campaign in defence was recognised by her team-mates when she was voted as the players’ player of the year.

She said: “It is nice to get any award, but one which is voted for by your peers is special and means a lot. These are the people you are training with and going out onto the pitch with every week.”

Rebecca continued: “After Christmas we had a good spell where we were winning a lot of games, scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.

“It tailed off towards the end of the season and that was frustrating. Personally, it is great to get an award, but you would trade that in for the team doing a bit better.

“We have definitely got the quality in the squad. Now it is about keeping the right players, bringing in a few more and making sure we’re in a good position for next season.”

The awards evening, which also included a buffet and quiz, was kindly sponsored by popular local business Sidey.

Finance director Andrew Litster said: “We’ve been involved with St Johnstone for many years now and we love the community engagement it brings.

“The women’s game puts another dimension on that and we are thrilled we can support it in a consistent way, as we do with the men’s team.”
