MURRAY MAKES HISTORY AS HE GAINS HIS FIRST SCOTLAND CAP

26th July 2016

Murray Davidson wrote himself into the club record books tonight when he gained his first full international cap for Scotland.

The Saints midfielder’s appearance in the 2-1 success over Luxembourg lasted only the two minutes of injury time but given the fact that it’s 80 years since we last had a player capped for Scotland, that matters little!

In an interesting aside, both the Scotland goals were scored by Blackburn Rovers’ Jordan Rhodes – son of former Saints keeper Andy Rhodes. And, of course, the Scotland team were taken by interim manager and former Saints gaffer Billy Stark.

Willie Imrie and Sandy McLaren were the first Saints players to be capped for Scotland, appearing in a Scotland touring party in 1929 in games against Norway in Bergen and Germany in Berlin – Imrie scored Scotland’s goal in a 1-1 draw in the latter.

Goalkeeper Sandy McLaren also the played in a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam which Imrie missed and three years later, in September and October 1932, Sandy played against Ireland in Belfast and Wales at Tynecastle.

Congratulations from everyone connected with the club go to Murray on his personal achievement and ending our 80 year wait for a Scotland player!
